National Composites Centre

The NCC brings together dynamic companies and enterprising academics to develop new technologies for the design and rapid manufacture of high-quality composite products.

Specialities: Composites
Area Served: Bristol, BANES, North Somerset, South Glos
Founded: 2009

The National Composites Centre (NCC) was created in November 2009 with the publication of the UK Composites Strategy by the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills.  The set-up of the centre was a £25m investment supported by the European Regional Development Fund, the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Bristol was highlighted as the for the NCC and the University of Bristol as the owner and host of the Centre.  Set in 59 acres in North Bristol, NCC is situated at Bristol & Bath Science Park - one of the UK's biggest science parks and a key hub for innovation and high-tech research.

The site is conveniently located for the M4 and M5 motorways and Bristol's two railway stations, with green spaces and state-of-the-art facilities giving the opportunity to showcase the best scientific, academic and commercial expertise from across the South West of England.

The NCC is dedicated to helping business develop new and better composite products. It is equipped with some of the most sophisticated design, manufacturing and testing facilities in the world. Their team of highly skilled staff have experience in the design and use of composite materials in sectors including automotive, aerospace, marine, wind & tidal energy and consumer products. The NCC is also one of 11 Catapult Centres across the UK supporting High Value Manufacturing.

NCC offers memberships with a range of benefits including opportunities to collaborate with leading manufacturers, access to equipment and expertise as well as business support opportunities.  There's also a free consultation offer to businesses who wish to discuss a composite project with an expert. Non members can also benefit from consultation in the areas of design, simulation, materials, manufacturing/processing and access a wide range of equipment on a pay by the hour basis.

NCC objectives: key

- Provide manufacturing facilities at an industrial scale and rapid manufacturing processes capable of building prototypes to validate design concepts

- Be the hub of the UK's effort to develop and implement rapid composite manufacturing technologies and systems

- Lead the co-ordination of a strengthened network of regional centres of composites excellence

- Provide direction and focus for fundamental research and collaborative links with UK universities

- Help to develop and co-ordinate training to support the skills base necessary for applying advanced and specialist composite technologies
